Fat Loss Diets. Are They All the Same?
|
The short answer is no. Not only are some fat loss diets not likely to
work, some can actually cause health issues now and in the future for
those who do not have the information they need to make a solid and
educated decision about the best fat loss diet for their particular body
size and type, metabolism, fitness level and lifestyle.
One diet regimen that is popular at the moment deserves special attention
– the high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. Claims made with this system
include quick and steady loss of weight, lean muscle building, fast burn
of stored body fat and a higher metabolic rate, compared to other diets.
Some researchers have identified health risks from a diet too high in
protein. These include skin problems and a potential increase in cancer
risk. In contrast, there is negligible risk of getting too little protein
in a fat loss diet, because proteins are found in foods that are
emphasized in both healthy and unhealthy fat loss diets, and in so many
common foods. For instance, fruit, starchy root vegetables and leafy green
vegetables are good sources of protein.
High protein, low carbohydrate fat loss diets encourage an increased
consumption of meat, eggs, and cheese, and discourage high carbohydrate
items such as bread, pasta and rice. The theory behind the diet is that
too many carbs in the diet leads to an excess of enzymes in the body to
deal with the carbs; this may cause a loss of pancreatic cells and
contribute to health concerns such as diabetes. So, by eliminating high-carb
foods encourages your body to burn fat and maintains a consistent
blood-sugar level, according to its proponents.
Those who should avoid a high protein, low-carb include pregnant women,
people with kidney disorders and those with diabetes. As with all fat loss
diets, it is important to consult with a health professional before
starting, and to ensure that proper nutrition is maintained throughout.
During the first two weeks of the regimen the only carbs permitted in low-carb
fat loss diets are those obtained from vegetables like tomatoes, which are
high in carbohydrates.
Some people experience rapid weight loss during this phase of the diet,
but it is important to remember that such rapid results cannot be
sustained. Low-carb fat loss diets depend on long-term and ongoing
lifestyle changes to keep weight off, so make sure that you can commit to
the system before undertaking this type of diet.
