Fat Loss - Do The Popular Programs Work?
|
There are countless fat loss products and advertisements that claim they
will make you thin, but do any of them actually work?
An estimated 50 million Americans try to lose weight every year but only
about 5% actually lose weight. It is at the point where some people will try
anything to burn fat even if it means spending plenty of money with little
result. With all the new fat loss products available, here is an explanation
of what each one does.
Herbalife Program; dieters drink shakes to replace two meals per day and
take herbal supplements for nutrients, unfortunately replacing two meals
with shakes leaves dieters very hungry.
Nestle's Sweet Success is a snack bar eaten three times per day instead of
meals. You will lose weight quick but you will still be hungry.
Ultra Slim Fast; instead of eating a meal you drink diet powder mixed with a
beverage. Because you are not actually eating you will still be hungry and
are likely to gain the weight back.
Diet pills containing Ephedra or phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride will
raise blood pressure and heart rate with just one dose. These pills are
especially dangerous to take before exercising because your blood pressure
will rise to a dangerously high level causing hypertensive crisis or heart
palpitations.
Chitosan products contain fibers from shellfish that can cause diarrhea and
gas. These pills have little effect unless you have a healthy diet and
exercise.
Chromium supplements claims to lower blood sugar levels and body fat. In
reality, for them to work the dose has to be incredibly high which can cause
anemia before it would even begin to help you lose weight.
Green Tea Extract is an anti-oxidant which in sufficient quantities can help
your immune system and metabolism, but there is no evidence that it results
in significant weight loss.
St. John's Wort is a mild anti-depressant often found in medications and
several foods such as preserved cheeses and tyramine and is difficult to
work into a healthy diet.
Xenical is proven in clinical trials and FDA approved for weight loss. It
blocks one third of the fat from the food you eat and expels it through your
body’s bowel movements, it may result in bloating and gas. It works best
with a healthy diet and exercise program.
It is important to understand there is no magic pill for fat loss that will
work instantly. You can lose weight, but it will take some time. Understand
that your body takes in calories to be used as fuel throughout your day.
When you take in more calories than your body needs, anything left over is
stored as fat and when your body does not get enough calories it becomes
tired and hungry. So to lose weight you must take in fewer calories by
eating healthier food and burn off extra calories through exercise. If you
do not exercise you will not keep your muscle tone and you may end up with
flaps of skin hanging off your body.
Do not make your exercise regimen and diet so extreme it is near impossible.
Be realistic, if you restrict yourself to only eating food you don't like
you are less likely to stick to the diet. Eat your favorite foods in
moderation by mixing small portions with the healthy food.
Before you do anything to lose weight, make sure to consult your doctor.
Your doctor cares about your health and will be able to help you make the
fat loss decisions that are right for you.
