Proven Systems to Reduce Body Fat
|
One common reasons people decide to diet is to reduce body fat. To do that
safely and effectively, a proven system may be the right way to go.
Programs to reduce body fat include books that provide basic advice that
anyone can follow. Some call for reducing your intake of certain food
groups, or following fairly structured meal plans. Others give basic
guidelines but leave the details up to you.
A popular book for people who want to reduce body fat is the
low-carbohydrate program described in Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution.
Published several decades ago, the Atkins Diet has provided results that
many millions of people have vouched for.
The Atkins Diet developed in response to the health problems associated with
excess body fat, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. It proposes
that to reduce body fat, one needs to control the intake of carbohydrates.
That does not mean sacrificing fundamental nutrients, but eliminating much
of the high-carb sources that pose problems for many people, like breads,
pasta and other grain-based foods. The idea is that the body will begin to
burn off fat as the carb source of energy is limited.
High protein foods are the focus in the Atkins Diet, and some suggest this
makes the diet a little too high in meat. As with any diet plan, check with
your health professional before undertaking any significant change to your
diet. Make sure you get all the nutrients you need, and take supplements if
necessary.
Another program that promises to reduce body fat is called Eat More, Weigh
Less. Written by Dr. Ornish, this plan calls for very little meat,
especially compared to the Atkins Diet. One issue to be aware of with this
strategy is that, because it restricts intake of dairy it may result in not
enough calcium. Its lack of seafood and poultry is also a concern.
The Zone is a diet system that restricts carbs somewhat to reduce body fat.
Proteins are emphasized, especially sources of low-fat protein such as fish
and poultry. Vegetables, fruits and grains are also high on the go-ahead
list under The Zone program. One quibble is that grains and calcium are not
recommended in amounts high enough to provide a balanced diet without
supplements.
Finally, the Pritkin Principle calls for increasing the high-water content
foods in your diet to reduce body fat. This diet recommends only limited
lean meat choices for protein, and suggests high volumes of vegetables,
fruit, oatmeal, and low-fat dairy products.
