There are so many plans and programs out there, from books and audiotapes to CDs, DVDs, clubs and membership plans. How to know which is which, and whether any really do what they promise?

Is a treadmill one of the top secret fat loss secrets?

This claim has been made. Treadmills are touted as the best way to burn fat and lose weight, while applying muscle mass that makes the user healthier and leaner. While a treadmill, used in moderation and with a gradual increase in difficulty, will certainly help someone trying to drop a few pounds, it is not a miracle cure for excess body fat. Be wary of exaggerated claims of the benefits of treadmills. You will burn more calories by using a treadmill, but if that is the only change you make in your life, the results will probably disappoint you after a few weeks or months.

Can I use top secret fat loss secrets so that I can eat as much as I want?

If you want to drop weight and burn fat, you will need to change what you eat. Small, simple changes will produce the desired results, at a rate that you will be able to maintain over time. There is no point in aiming for unrealistic levels of weight-loss or looking for a program that touts no change in your life, because these will fail. You will need to look at what you eat now, and aim to reduce your weekly calorie count, if you hope to make any last change. Remember, 3500 calories could equate to one pound of body fat. So, aiming to reduce 500 calories a day may lead to weight-loss at a reasonable pace, of one pound per week.

Is changing my waist-to-hip ratio one of the top secret fat loss secrets?

While the waist-to-hip ratio has been associated with increased risk of heart attack and other health issues, changing this is not a top secret fat loss secret. Trying to alter the shape nature gave you will only lead to frustration, and potentially result in overeating, depression and other equally serious health problems. Set sensible goals for just what you can change about your body shape, such as reduced levels of fat in your belly.

As you check out the large number of weight-loss programs and fat-busting systems available, remember that big promises are everywhere. Some will prove helpful, others will likely lead to heartache, so keep in mind that an easy-to-follow plan has the best chance of success.
